Gustavo Castelluccio
Gustavo is studying Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology, USA. He earned both his Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering and his Master of Science in Material Science from the Instituto Balseiro, in Bariloche, Argentina. For his doctorate, which he expects to finish in December 2010, Gustavo is conducting research on the initiation process of fatigue of metallic components.


Camila Ribeiro Cardoso
Camila received her B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2005, where she worked as a teaching and research assistant at the Laboratory of Transmission and Heat Technology. Her studies were concentrated in the theoretical and experimental analysis of flow and heat transfer in microtubes. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Rice University, USA, where she is working on a project to study heat transfer and reaction rate enhancement in rectangular microchannels with carbon nanotubes at the bottom, which she expects to finish in May 2009.



Iván Castillo Contreras
Iván is studying Chemical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, USA. Iván received his Bachelor degree at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Colombia, and his Master of Science in Electronic and Computer Engineering, Major Automation and Control, from the Universidad de los Andes, also in Colombia. Ivan’s current research focuses on the application of “Fault Tolerant Control” (FTC) to complex chemical processes. The final goal of this research is to increase plant availability and reduce the risk of safety hazards. He expects to finish his doctorate in September 2010.



Wilson Vesga Rivera
Wilson will study Materials Engineering and Materials Design at the University of Nottingham, UK. He obtained both his Bachelor in Metallurgical Engineering and his MA in Engineering at the Universidad Industrial de Santander, Colombia. His Ph.D. studies will focus on the basic mechanics of microstructure and texture evolution during deformation and recrystallization which form the foundation of the industrially important thermomechanical processing of alloys.



Ubaldo Aleriano Sánchez
Ubaldo is studying Mechanical Engineering at RWTH-Aachen University, Germany. He obtained his Master degree in Production Organization at the University of Delft, Netherlands and his Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering at the Universidad de las Américas, in México. For his Ph.D., Ubaldo is studying three different manufacturing processes and three different vision systems with the objective of creating a closed-loop control system in order to assure the quality of the operation in-line.



Jorge Enrique Muñoz García
Jorge will study Materials Science at the Ecole des Mines de París, France. He obtained both his Master in Metallurgy and Materials Sciences and his Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering at the Universidad Michoacana, México. For his Ph.D., Jorge expects to study a variety of physical, metallurgic & mechanical aspects of visco-plastic behavior of steel alloys: relays on ductile fracture of diffusion welded joins of different heterogeneous materials/alloys used in the energy industry; and the identification of fracture mechanism and simulation (finite element methods) of crack propagation under multi axial loads, with the aim of preventing failure.



Diana Maria Avram
Diana began her Ph.D. in 2008 in Radiation Science and Technology at the Politecnico di Milano, Italy. She received her Bachelor degree in Automation and Computer Engineering, at the Politehnica University of Timisoara, Romania. For her Ph.D., Diana is studying the problem of assessing the safety of the repositories engineered to dispose of radioactive waste coming from nuclear power plants. A probabilistic analysis methodology will be employed for a systematic identification and evaluation of possible incidental scenarios of dispersion of contaminant.



Sanda Lefteriu
Sanda is studying in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Rice University, USA, where she also obtained her Master degree. She previously obtained her Bachelor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Jacobs University in Bremen, Germany. For her doctorate, Sanda is conducting research on the problem of model reduction for coupled electro-acousto-mechanical finite elements-models as basis for controller design.



Andrei Rotaru
Andrei began his Ph.D. in 2007 in Materials Science and Solid State Chemistry at the University of St Andrews, UK. He obtained his Bachelor degree in Chemistry and Physics (with Honours) at the University of Bucharest, Romania. For his doctorate Andrei is working to identify and characterize the structure and morphology of new tungsten bronze oxides with various magnetically active species. A perspective development of a methodology for multiferroic tungsten-bronzes and magnetoelectric coupling is expected.



Michel Cancelliere Fernandez
Michel will study Environment and Land Management at the Politecnico di Torino, Italy, where he also obtained his Master of Science in Mathematical Engineering. He received his Bachelor in Petroleum Engineering, at the Universidad Central de Venezuela. For his Ph.D., Michel expects to study the generation and implementation of innovative numerical methods for solve fast and efficiently the mathematical problems encountered in Reservoir Simulation in order to improve the efficiency of calculation in large and heterogeneous reservoirs.
