Fellows Conference Series - Carlos Castaño: "Cerium-based conversion coatings on magnesium, aluminum and steel alloys"

Carlos is pursuing his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering at the Missouri University of Science and Technology in the US. He received both his Bachelor of Engineering Physics and his Master of Science in Processes and Materials Engineering at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia.

This research is being conducted to develop an environmental friendly anti-corrosion conversion coating process that can be applied on individual and galvanically coupled magnesium, aluminum and steel alloys for vehicle applications.

A systematic study has been carried out to identify the most important processing parameters that have a major impact in the effectiveness of the CeCCs on these alloys. Different surface cleaning pretreatments, coating thicknesses, bath deposition temperatures, galvanic coupled systems, and ambient exposure methods have been explored. The intent is to better understand the key processing parameters that inhibit corrosion on individual and coupled alloys.

The corrosion properties of the different coatings were evaluated by cyclic potentiodynamic polarization studies, salt spray testing and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The corrosion products, surface morphology, structural features and composition of the coatings were examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and focused ion beam characterization.
